With the help of scientists from High Tech, High Touch, St. Thomas the Apostle classrooms were transformed into living laboratories where students discovered the wonder of science and nature through fun, interactive, hands-on experiences that explored cool and creepy bugs, weather, matter, geology and machines. The universal response? “That was amazing!” Science at STA is amazing!

Last October, St. Thomas students were treated to a black and orange out-of-uniform day in exchange for a donation to Neustros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH) USA an organization that transforms the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children in Latin America and the Caribbean with homes, healthcare and educational programs. STA’s Director of Advancement, Cecily Fultz, personally delivered a check for $350 to Kieran Rigney, Director of the NPH home in the Dominican Republic during a week-long mission trip over the holidays. The St. Thomas spirit has no boundaries!
“Most important for me is that my children practice charity, because if they love they will be loved. This will make that their work is efficient and effective, they will exercise an influence on their own children and on their society and they will reach its salvation.”
—Fr. William B. Wasson, Founder of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos™

STA’s Gospel Choir bestowed a little Christmas cheer on commuters at Chicago’s Millennium Station during the holiday season! Under the guidance of director Mr. Willie Jones, the choir shared favorite carols as well as their wishes for a joyous, peaceful holiday throughout the city. The crowd that gathered became immediate fans of St. Thomas the Apostle! Afterwards, the students were treated to hot chocolate before returning to Hyde Park. It was an extraordinary experience for all in attendance!

Junior Achievement is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating youth about financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. During a recent JA in a Day at STA, business volunteers helped educate and inspire St. Thomas students about the connection between education and success in the workplace by sharing their personal experiences. Elementary students were introduced to the topics of money management, economics, community and career readiness while middle school students explored budgeting, saving, credit card risk, careers and employer expectations. They all learned valuable skills needed to experience the realities and opportunities of work and entrepreneurship in the 21st Century global marketplace.

Who better to serve as math mentors to St. Thomas the Apostle students than 21 volunteers from Price Waterhouse Coopers? A morning full of challenging math games helped reinforce conceptual understanding and stretch individual problem solving skills. It was a great cooperative learning experience for our students thanks to PWC and the Big Shoulders Fund!
