Opportunities for Giving
You can have an impact on the life of a child! A donation to any of the following initiatives is one of the best investments you can make in the future. Any amount is welcome — gifts of prayer are always appreciated as well. Remember, we may not have so many opportunities to do something great but we have many, many opportunities to do something good.
Our annual appeal to alumni, school parents, parishioners, friends, faculty and staff will help STA dramatically improve our technology program by nearly doubling the number of Chromebooks and iPads in use in classrooms throughout grade levels. Principal Tim Gallo says,
“Education is now a rapidly-evolving field, and technology is a major driving force behind this change. STA is proud of the technology it currently has, but wants to continue to expand and improve its program. Establishing a high-quality technology program is difficult to do within the school’s operating budget, and so we are pleased to be able to campaign, this year, for this particular purpose.”
We have received a very generous challenge from a donor who is deeply invested in the mission of STA; he will match all gifts up to $30,000. Please join us with your own gift, knowing that each dollar you give will become two.
Click on the Donate Now link to the left to go to our online giving page where you can make a one time gift via your credit card or withdrawal from your checking account; or make a pledge to be completed over time — the amount of your choice, paid on the schedule of your choice. Our solicitation of parents lasts through the month of November so we will stop asking — but you can keep giving! Thank you.
“No child should be denied his or her right to an education in faith, which in turn nurtures the soul of a nation.” – Pope Benedict XVI
St. Thomas the Apostle is committed to finding ways to ensure Catholic education is accessible and affordable for all those who desire the advantages it offers their children. Donations to our Scholarship Fund provide assistance for families in need as well as emergency tuition for families experiencing loss of employment, sudden or severe illness or other financial hardships.
Established in honor of Monique Danielle Lazarde, a member of the class of 1979, this memorial scholarship was created by Monique’s family and friends to provide assistance for a deserving student who otherwise would not be able to attend STA. Those who knew Monique remember her as a very involved, outgoing young woman who loved music and had a positive influence on everyone she met. Thanks to the Monique Lazarde Memorial Scholarship, she will continue to inspire others by ensuring young people have the opportunity, as she did, to experience Catholic education. Donations to the fund are welcome!
The Frances Y. Wiley Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in honor Frances Sumiko Yoshida Wiley, a revered member of the Hyde Park Community and St. Thomas the Apostle Parish for over 60 years. Fondly remembered as one of the original “tiger moms,” Frances cared fiercely not only for her own children, but for all of the students at STA. She and her husband were the proud parents of eight children, all of whom attended St. Thomas the Apostle School. St. Thomas youth were the beneficiaries of numerous enrichment programs for art music and crafts thanks to Mrs. Wiley’s efforts. She also shared her gifts and talents with the school by designing and sewing costumes for the annual St. Thomas Players musical and creating exquisite quilts for auction at fundraisers. The Frances Y. Wiley Memorial Scholarship Fund was created by her family to honor Mrs. Wiley and her devotion to STA. Donations to the fund will be used to assist families experiencing economic hardship or who are in need of emergency financial assistance. Those who share their treasure with St. Thomas the Apostle School through the Frances Y. Wiley Scholarship Fund will continue to promote her legacy of love for the school and its children.
Science & Technology
During the summer of 2014, St. Thomas the Apostle’s middle school science lab was transformed into a 21st Century learning space. New lab tables, storage cabinets, flooring, lighting and an interactive white board provide students with a stimulating educational environment for scientific exploration.
In order to complete our vision for a comprehensive science program, we require additional technology and classroom materials to promote student learning. Our wishes include:
- Technology enhancements to the science program (Smart Boards for all classrooms, 5 tablets or iPads per room, and 3 sets of shared classroom response systems)
- Robotics unit and materials for grades 5-6.
- Additional science learning modules: FOSS kits for grades 5-8.
Fr. Oldershaw Fine Arts Fund
Former students may remember the highly acclaimed Children’s Choir of St. Thomas the Apostle led by Fr. Robert Oldershaw. Under his creative direction, the ensemble recorded two albums and performed at venues throughout the Hyde Park community. St. Thomas the Apostle continues to be committed to arts education through weekly music and art classes, a gospel choir, and after-school piano and violin programs. Donations to the Fr. Oldershaw Fine Arts Fund would enable us to increase instructional time in the arts, offer formal violin and band programs and purchase new curtains for the stage, risers and choir robes.
STA has a long history of outstanding sports performance as evidenced by the Wall of Fame in our gym. In order to continue to provide a competitive environment for our student athletes, STA seeks funding for new uniforms and equipment as well as renovation of the gym floor and ceiling.
The Father Shannon Building Fund
Our wonderfully historic building is a daily reminder of the lasting legacy of St. Thomas the Apostle School. But in order for us to embrace the future, it needs some significant TLC including new flooring, electrical upgrades, bathroom renovations, new air conditioners, and repairs to the roof. Enhancements to the grounds through additional plantings of trees, shrubs, and perennials, will extend the beautiful landscaping of the Neighborhood Reading Garden. Although it may sound overwhelming, the images of all those who have gone before inspire us to preserve their legacy for generations to come.
“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.”
